Conductors’ pathways

Your conductor/harmony leader learning pathway can include a range of workshops, intensives such as Harmony Leader Training workshop, Conducting Intensive, Chunking Intensive, Listening Model Intensive, Voice Training Workshop and Reading Music for Singers (if relevant). Brian also offers a 1:1 Personal Mentoring package of 10 sessions (face-to-face or remote) supported by a competency workbook.

Professional Learning & Training

Brian can customise professional learning for your context, e.g., corporate professional voice users, classroom teachers, music teachers, harmony leaders/conductors and touring professional artists. Please see the workshop suite and private lessons for the range of activities and services.

Joy of
Singing

In this workshop you will experience the Joy of Singing in harmony with others. You’ll sing music from different cultures including world music and gospel. You’ll learn to listen and connect with others, to hold your part and to use a range of vocal techniques. This workshop is for beginners and experienced singers alike. Reading music is not necessary.

Joy of Harmonising

In this workshop you’ll experience voice play, grooving and harmonising. You’ll learn to take groove ideas, then harmonise those ideas, to work with a particular song or melody and improvise harmonies.  You’ll experience making harmonies from what you hear, and you’ll learn the tricks and tools for using your ear and harmonising.

Voice
Training

In this workshop you’ll learn the nuts and bolts of the voice and vocal technique, how to use your instrument and what it can do. Techniques and concepts include the voice production, ingredients of voice, what each muscle can do and how that affects the sound, learning how to put ingredients together in recipes that relate to your own recipe of your own voice.

Spoken Voice Training

The voice training workshop is suitable for vocalists, bands, groups and corporate professional voice users (e.g., presenters, lecturers, trainers, facilitators, teachers). It covers voice production, confidence, power and maintenance. This workshop is suitable for business and organisations to offer as staff training and can be customised to suit your organisation.

Voice Power

You’ll learn vocal performance, production and presentation techniques. Concepts and skills include confidence and communication through the voice, exploration of vocal power at a technical and psychological level, vocal projection, vocal maintenance, vocal health, awareness of using your voice to interact, confidence and presence with your audience.

Body Percussion

In this body percussion workshop, you’ll develop concentration and focus in learning to connect rhythm to the pulse and experience anchoring the pulse in your body. The workshop is suitable for music and dance students of all levels and experience, school students, and anyone who wants to explore rhythm.  Reading music is not necessary. Brian presents this workshop as Body Slap with Christine Clegg.

Harmony Leader Training

This is an introductory workshop for learning the skills and concepts you need for teaching a song in harmony. These include conducting skills and techniques, body language skills, chunking (how to take parts of the music and put it back together), harmony skills in holding a part, how to convey that to singers you’re working with, song choice and gauging levels of difficulty with a song.

Advanced Harmony Leader Training

Brian has developed a series of Advanced Harmony Leader Training extension workshops which can be undertaken on their own or as a package/intensive. These modules are accompanied by competency workbooks. He also offers 1:1 mentoring and coaching. Brian’s aim is to create a training package that serve as an industry standard for harmony leaders.

Music teachers’ professional development workshops

Brian provides customised harmony leader training to suit school music teachers in both primary and secondary contexts. In these workshops he covers contemporary vocal techniques, harmony stabilising skills, voice maintenance for teachers and to pass onto students, vocal conducting skills, and conducting techniques for different styles such as gospel, pop, jazz and world music.

Corporate team building

In corporate team building sessions, Brian uses elements of his Joy of Singing, Body Percussion, Spoken Voice Training and Voice Power workshops to create group awareness, awareness of own behaviour and self in response to the group, full body awareness, presenting and communicating information, group communication through the modality of singing / body percussion.

Choir polishing

Brian has been called the ‘Choir Whisperer’ for the way in which he will work with your established choir to polish their existing material, improve what they’re doing vocally and as an ensemble. He offers the option of working with you, the conductor and how you’re interacting with the choir, polishing your conductor’s skills and developing group skills in order to work as a symbiotic unit.

Rural and regional harmony outreach program

Brian has lived and worked in a number of rural and regional areas and understands the difficulty in establishing a choir without harmony leader training and support. Brian will customise a program to support a community choir establish in your rural or regional area. He can run choir sessions online via Zoom, training the choir leader to be able to take over.

Choirs and Groups

Joy of Singing Maleny

The Joy of Singing Maleny is an exciting a cappella choir for shower singers and experienced singers alike. Singing together creates a magical experience that opens the heart and connects people.

 

1 – 2:30pm Wednesdays during school term at the Maleny Community Centre 23 Maple St, Maleny QLD 4552. All welcome, reading music is not necessary. First session Donation. 

$20 per session or $100 for 6 Sessions

Intake for new members beginning of term 1 and term 3 (School Term)

Mouth Orchestra

Mouth Orchestra is an advanced performance choir with a repertoire including world and contemporary music. Gain the tenfold experience of joy, fulfilment and shining harmonies when you join MO singing.

 

7 – 9 pm Thursdays during school term Guide Hall 17-19 Cedar St, Maleny QLD 4552.

 

Thereafter $20 a night or $170 a term, Try out night $5 

Sunshine Statesmen

The Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop Chorus are members of Barbershop Harmony Australia, and as such are part of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a worldwide community of singers dedicated to acappella.

Production Services

In your sessions with Brian, Brian can provide a range of approaches to composition and arranging, develop your creative pathways and set solid milestones for your project.

Brian can provide instrumentation, creating sound landscapes, work with density and texture, identify compositional issues and problems uncover how an arrangement is related to what you’re trying to communicate and express with your work.

Arranging and composing

Brian is experienced in arranging scores and band charts for recording sessions and performances and creating songbooks for original artists.

He accepts composing commissions such as soundtracks, theme songs and compositions for events and occasions.

Studio Session Recording

Brian is available for booking as a session musician on lead vocals, backing vocals, piano/keyboard and percussion. He can edit vocals and edit keyboard tracks, write band arrangements and scores, arrange, take the role as band leader/musical director and producer.

Event Musical Director

Brian is experienced as am event musical director including coordinating musicians and singers, creating and producing opening and closing ceremonies, massed choir conducting and audience participation. Examples include Carols by Candlelight, Hinterland Harmony Bonanza, Sunshine Coast Choral Festival.
